C., WED., SEPT. 30, 1942 BLACKOUT A SUCCESS Chief Air Raid Warden W. W. »sman, reports that the Tryon had a complete blackout Tuesday night when the state wide air raid alarm was given. The only thing visible by light in Tryon was the headlight of a freight train passing and the stars above. Not even the lightn ing bugs were out. In some areas horns tooted the alarm or shot gun noise was used. Telephones, messenger scohts on bicycles and others were busy for 45 minutes. Auto traffic was stopped on the highways. If it takes blackouts to win the war or save our homes the people of Polk county showed that they were ready and willing. In less than one minute all lights were out here. THEY’RE IN THE SCRAP jjehool children of Sunnyview i collected over 5,000 pounds of s's^pp metal for their scrap pile, according to Chairman F. P. Ba con, who reports that Principal Millsans has a fine group of chil dren searching their neighborhoods for scrap metal. Mill Spring citi zens have put their scrap metal with the big pile in Tryon. Salu da has a scrap pile at the town tennis court. Stearns school has a pile. Everybody is getting in the scrap to heat the Jap. Blanchard Court Chairman Rev. R. W. Blanchard has been elected chairman of the Polk Coun ty Boy Scout Court of Honor, ac cording to announcement by Dis trict Chairman R. H. Brady. The first court of honor of the season will be held in the school house. Weather Tuesday: low 36, high 62 ... . Dogs for Defense axe wanted. If you have any dogs suitable for war work and would like to give them to the govern ment, the proper application blanks are in the office of the Rationing Board .... The Boy Scouts of the Piedmont Council collected 73,000 pounds of scrap metal this year .... One of the most interesting talks given at the Tryon Kiwanis club was that on Tuesday when E. N. Addis told how he happened to come to Tryon: first through reading a newspaper story; then a trip through interesting Virginia to the mountains and down Pacolet gorge; then the hospitable recep tion he received from local citi zens and by what he had heard others say.
